Background
RIG is a national initiative launched in 2024 by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) to connect Germany’s leading robotics research institutions. Its goal: to strengthen collaboration, accelerate scientific progress, and increase international visibility in robotics and AI.
As one of RIG's partners, MPI-IS in Stuttgart is leading the charge in building talent pipelines into robotics with a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion through the RIGI program. The internship program offers paid, short-term research internships to bachelor's and master’s students from underrepresented backgrounds in robotics research around the world. The internship program started in 2024, with a pilot version hosting 18 international interns. In 2025, RIGI recruited its first generation of 10 interns.
Our Approach
At RIGI, we focus on equity of opportunity and diversity of perspectives in robotics.
We especially welcome applicants who are from groups traditionally underrepresented in robotics and AI research institutions. This could include limited access to research or academic opportunities, being the first in your family to attend university, balancing studies with work or family responsibilities, or experiences shaped by migration, displacement, disability, or other personal circumstances. We value curiosity, resilience, and the unique perspectives that each intern brings to our community.
Coordination Team
RIGI is coordinated by a dedicated team at the MPI-IS in Stuttgart. In addition to the coordination team, MPI-IS staff provide administrative and scientific support to the interns.
